'Hacchi’ is located in the centre of the Hachinohe city, Aomori Prefecture. Its aim is to rejuvenate the town culture and local tourism as an exchange facility to regain momentum and excitement in the town.

Our proposal is that the museum acts as a portal thus becoming the actual entrance to Hachinohe and was selected as the first prize in 2006. We proposed a simple open-type design. Concerning the urban development of the area, a fundamental principle of the new plan was to promote Hachinohe’s rich manufacturing heritage in its production of food and various other goods by developing creative public facilities and attractions.

Hachinohe has a cold climate but has been very well developed. The interior of the building gives the same experience of structure and depth as walking through the city’s streets and alleyways. This is regarded as the city’s expression of the city’s architecture thus creating the excitement of being in a town by we thought making it more fun to walk through the building. The garden atrium in the centre of the building supplies air to five floors and is used as a public space for exhibitions and activities during the holidays. The light garden expands gradually in shape as it goes towards the top more natural light can be taken deep into the building. Glimpses of the light from the garden can be seen from within the building.Three companies which exhibit festival floats, an intangible cultural asset, have been designated for a three-tier atrium space which looks on to the national highway. The floats on display do not always occupy the space. Hachinohe, outside of this short season can take advantage of open space outside when the weather is cold, it is intended that it be used as the town square which can be utilised for events.Given the changes in the atrium of these sequences, a similar experience to that of the city is generated.

The fifth floor, as a base to be done to progress the project at this venue, studio apartments can be arranged to work with medium to long stays. Level 5 is the migration from copper to separate one end, like the retreat in the city, that we have a reasonable sense of distance used their guests to stay and participate in activities.
Control and maintenance summer sunlight was taken into consideration in the design process. The balcony receives sunlight, and a screen with folded perforated plate and wall greening provides shading. Nabiki planting provides wind protection.

March 11, exactly one month after opening, the East Japan earthquake occurred. In this facility little damage occurred since seismic isolation was adopted in its design. This, along with a generator ensured business travellers who were not able to return home after the earthquake and tourists could seek refuge here.
