New Library, Art museum, conference hall for local residents

SHAA and SHSH participated in a competition of the new cultural complex in front of Ota-city station in Japan.
We proposed an open plan art museum and library, in which visitors can see the art and easily access the library facilities during everyday life. The ground floor contains public art and an open library containing magazines, journals and children’s books, here there is no division of space by walls. There is a flexible conference room, which can also be used as an open public space connecting to the outside in the summer time. The two floors have an atrium which connects

vertical open space and provides space for large scale art projects. Each floor has a terrace. On the fourth floor there is a temporary art gallery, event and workshop space, for activities which require more privacy.

A metal brace structure has been employed to provide these open interior spaces. Some of the walls can grow vegetation on the facade, providing protection from the heat problem in the summer time as well as giving a beautiful natural light and shadow inside.
